Frankenweenie

So this week’s tally is a little higher than last weeks, but only “just”. That said, I got a comment or two last week pointing out that they too had low counts for their weeks. Maybe none of us were meant to see much of anything last week. I’m gonna go ahead and blame Mad Men for eating up two hours of my Sunday night.

The downside of my week was that I got super sick Sunday night…but the bright side was that allowed me a day home from work to throw on a few titles. Amusingly, were it not for that one day, I might have been staring at yet another four-watch-week!

I don’t anticipate that trend to continue now that a whole mittful of Hot Docs films have arrived and beg watching, so over the next few weeks, expect this list to climb ever-upward.

Here’s The Week at Hand…

Screenings
UPSTREAM COLOR –  It’s going to be interesting listening to the discussions surrounding this one.

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Never Seen
THE EXPIDETION TO THE END OF THE WORLD –  (Hot Docs Screener) The last two years, my Hot Docs slate has started with a gem. This year continues the trend.

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Watched Before
PROMETHEUS –  The beginning of the sick day trilogy (Try to act surprised)
DO THE RIGHT THING –  The continuation of the sick day trilogy (Was Gustavo from Breaking Bad always in this?)
RUSHMORE –  The conclusion of the sick day trilogy (Wait, THAT’S not a heavy drama!)
MILLER’S CROSSING –  Every time I’ve watched this, I can’t believe how long it took me to finally see it.
THE NEW WORLD –  I needed something pretty.

How’s about you – seen anything good?

17 Replies to “Days of The Week (Films Watched Apr 6 – Apr 12)

  1. I really should re-watch Miller’s Crossing. I’ve only seen it once, and I think I was too young at the time to really get it.

As for me, all first time:
    Scavenger Hunt
    The Rescue
    John Dies at the End
Snake and Crane Arts of Shaolin
    Frankenweenie (2012)
    Beasts of the Southern Wild
    Chinese Zodiac

    1. Do so – you’re in for good things!
Seems as though a lot of people I talked to last year either loved or hated BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD. Where did you come down on it?

      1. I’m actually in the middle on it. I love that it was on 16mm, though, gave it some nice grain that is rarely seen in films these days.

  2. Seeing Upstream Color tonight. Expedition has been sitting on my desk for two weeks now, hope to get to it in the next few days.

    First time:

Alias – Hot Docs screener. Decent little film.

Interior. Lester Bar. – Hot Docs screener. Cannot wait to see how this film is received.

Elena – Hot Docs screener. Really enjoyed this film.

Shorts That Are Not Pants – Another solid line up, though I loved the previous editions more.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation – better than the first, but the script is problematic.

    1. In a small way, you’re sorta pointing me towards the docs I should be looking at. That’s helpful since at the moment it just feels like an onslaught of dvd’s and links.

Grumpy that I missed Shorts – maybe James will set me up with a dvd or something.

  3. I’m kind of slowing things down a bit as far as film-watching is concerned though I did see a good number of films.

First-Timers: Ruby Sparks, I Know Where I’m Going!, A Canterbury Tale, A Matter of Life and Death, and earlier today, The Amazing Spider-Man.

Re-Watches: Curly Sue, Orgazmo, Born on the 4th of July, U-571, Ghostbusters, and Flight of the Navigator.

  4. My birthday week had a certain “theme” to it. Let’s see if you can guess it. >)

    Screenings:
Downloaded (Hot Docs Press Screening) – Can’t say much, but it was a good way to start my experience as accredited press
Evil Dead – Doesn’t top the original, but it was an overall enjoyable birthday screening.
Shorts That Are Not Pants – Seek out the short Las Palmas. You’ll thank me afterwards.
Muscle Shoals (Hot Docs Press Screening) – You should like this one.

    DVD/Blu-Ray First Time:
The Evil Dead – A gory good time!
Evil Dead II – Goofier than the original, but still fun.

    Blu-Ray Rewatch:
Donnie Donnie – Finished off my birthday with my favourite film (which happens to feature Evil Dead :P)

    Doesn’t Count:
Rock of Ages – Shut it off after 20 minutes

    1. You saw 20 minutes of Rock of Ages?

I will spare you the rest of the film because it was fucking bad. Lots of bad singing, lots of awful dance numbers, lots of cheesy moments, Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand going gay for each other, and lots of really dumb moments. It’s just one stupid ass film.

    2. I finally got my Hot Docs viewing under way in earnest as well. Going to be fun to start talking about these in a few weeks.

Rock of Ages was only “so-so” as a stage show. There was nothing about the looks of its film adaptation that made me feel like going back. People would be better off just listening to the songs on iTunes.

  5. An interesting week for me.

    New to me:
The Asphyx: Strange little period horror title. Fun, though.
The Seventh Seal: First time I saw the whole thing. My new favorite Bergman.
Cries and Whispers: Probably Bergman’s best, but not one I want to watch again soon.
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid: Supporting actor Bob Dylan? Yes, Bob Dylan.
S’en Fout la Mort: The best film about cockfighting you’re likely to see.
    Onibaba: Fan-damn-tastic.
Ride Lonesome: Too short by a good 15 minutes.
The Ugly: A little too simplistic, but a decent horror film. Good ending.

    Rewatches:
Tremors: I love this movie so, so much.
American Grindhouse: Essential to understanding this odd little part of American film.
Shane: The most Western-y Western ever made.

    1. I swear dude – every time you post your watchlists, I find myself feeling more and more sheltered. At least I know what THE SEVENTH SEAL is, even if I’m yet to yank it out of the blind spot.

  6. It’s been a slow week.

Firsts: The Piano– Very pretty and almost weird. Loved Paquin.
    Le Samourai– Pretty awesome.
My Man Godfrey– Love all the crazy people in screwball comedies. Quite fun.
