L'Eclisse

Last night I watched this month’s Blind Spot entry – the eleventh in the series. I think it’s the first time in months I wasn’t feverishly watching the night before like I was cramming for a chemistry exam in grade ten! Progress.

Today though, I’m casting an eye towards the sixth year of the series.

Once again, the great thing about being surrounded by such film-literate friends (and family members), is that they can point me in the right direction. Recently, for instance, I might not have caught up with films like BLOW OUT, STARMAN, THE LAST DETAIL, GINGER SNAPS, MARY AND MAX, and KON TIKI were it not for the specific suggestion of others.

So in thinking about next year’s Blind Spot Selections (set ’em up again!), I’m turning the curation over to anyone who reads this post.

Over on my Letterboxd profile, you’ll find plenty of notable titles that I haven’t seen. Choose the ten you believe are most egregious and the top choices will make up next year’s list. For bonus points, if there’s a film that isn’t listed there that you know I haven’t seen (or think I haven’t seen), feel free to make note of it.

So have at it folks – what am I watching in 2017?

13 Replies to “Where Do We Go: Pick the Next Blind Spot Selections

  1. Dude, I’ve seen like at least half of the titles on your list. (And I’m friggin’ younger than you! Then again, I have no life whatsoever so there’s that too.) Anyway, here are my picks:

    2046
    A Night to Remember
    Atlantic City
    A Woman Under the Influence
    Howards End
    Last Tango in Paris
    Seconds
    The Cameraman
    The Elephant Man
    The Lives of Others
The Man Who Fell to Earth
    The Wrong Man

(And yes, I know I’ve been overdue with my submissions. I’ve just been busy, that’s all.)

  2. Jeez it was difficult this year! Lot of great options. Here’s my 10:

The Wages of Fear (if I could vote for this more than once, I would)
    The Lady Vanishes
    The Invisible Man
    Deliverance
    Rififi
    The Elephant Man
    The Ladykillers
    The Player
    Bob le Flambeur
    Delicatessen

  3. Only 10? I could easily recommend 20. I could only narrow it down to 12. Don’t ask me to cut any more. They’re all great.

    Breaking the Waves
    Diary of a Country Priest
    Heaven’s Gate
    L’Atalante
    M. Hulot’s Holiday
    Ordet
    Pather Panchali
    Safe
    Stalker
    Taste of Cherry
The Decalogue (technically TV, but 2 episodes were turned into films: A Short Film about Killing & A Short Film About Love)
    The House is Black

  4. Heck that’s a great list you’ve get to choose from and there’s a few I should look into. But here goes:
    Aguirre Wrath of God
    Night to Remember
    Kes
    M Hulot’s Holiday
    Wrong Man
    Ladykillers (original Brit version)
    Tender Mercies
    Portrait of Jason
    Triumph of the Will
    Worker’s Leaving the Factory-ya it’s short
Greed-try not to get the version with the inserted stills-ruins the flow
    M Butterfly
    The Player
Thief of Bagdad-for the absolute glory of form and movement
bit more than you asked for-

  5. Amores Perro – I haven’t seen this, but I want to, so you should too.
Enter The Void – this is so wild, I had it on my Blind Spot list 2 years ago.
Laurence Anyways – This movie is AMAZING
My Own Private Idaho – Love this movie.
The Elephant Man – Another I had on a previous Blind Spot that I enjoyed
Watership Down – aka The England Bunny Massacre
Waltz with Bashir – More style over substance but still a good watch.
Wild Strawberries – Also on a former Blind Spot list.

And that’s all I got. I haven’t seen 10 films on your list.

Melina and Melinda is awful, skip that.

  6. I’ll be bias in my suggestions, picking mostly British films.

Watership Down is a must – you’ll be singing Bright Eyes after while crying
Bullets of Broadway – saw it this year and thought it was pretty fun
Amores Perro – for sure, this is a brilliant film
Delicatessen – you haven’t seen this?? Crazy!
    Howard’s End – classic
The Lady Vanishes – Hitchcock doing what he does best
The 39 Steps – but not that version you have on your list – you need the Hitchcock version, far better film
Definitely a Studio Ghibli film too – I’d say Howl as its my favourite but Nausicaa is the first full Miyazaki film (not counting The Castle of Cagliostro, which was a duel direction)

But if you only pick one – go with Watership Down, it will be unlike the others. I would also suggest Animal Farm too but its not in your list – going rogue!

  7. Ryan, there are so many great films in here. I didn’t include more than one from any filmmaker. You really can’t go wrong!

    Here are my 10:
    2046
    A Woman Under the Influence
    Carlito’s Way
    Fitzcarraldo
    Pierrot Le Fou
    Smoke
    Stalker
    The Exterminating Angel
    Wages of Fear
    Wild Strawberries

  8. Enter the Void
    2046
    24 Hour Party People
    A Woman Under the Influence
    Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
    Breaking the Waves
    Exotica
    Jeanne Dielman
    Heaven’s Gate
    & The Decalogue

  9. Based on your list

A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE (and THE KILLING OF THE CHINESE BOOKIE if you’ve not seen that Cassavetes either)
    BREAKING THE WAVES
    COFFY
    ORPHEUS
    SAFE
TASTE OF CHERRY (how can I not recommend a Kiarostami film???)
    THE VANISHING
NAUSICAA OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND

Not from your list, because I must

    BLAZING SADDLES
    SILENT FILM
    FISH STORY
    LADY SNOWBLOOD
    WHERE IS MY FRIEND’S HOUSE?
    THE WHITE BALLOON
    PARIS,TEXAS
    FAIL-SAFE

    and

CONDORMAN??????? (it can be your 13th pick)

  10. So many good ones, including some I still have on my watch list! I recommend:
    L’ATALANTE
A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH
    INVISIBLE MAN
    THE LADY VANISHES
    SECONDS
    THE VANISHING
    RIFIFI
    WATERSHIP DOWN
    CARLITO’S WAY
