…and we’re back.

I do hope y’all enjoyed the audio component of my 2013 Hot Docs coverage, but now three weeks and three director interviews later, The Matineecast Classic has returned.

Ordinarily, the show seems to come out of the festival and launch into discussion of a Marvel movie. This year though, our attention is turned towards Baz Luhrmann. As much as I’ve enjoyed covering Marvel movies every May, I gotta say this is a welcome switch.

As for my guest, I’m pretty excited to be welcoming her to the show. I’ve been going back and forth with her for months on episodes she might be interested in, and her enthusiasm for dropping by was really encouraging. Hopefully she likes the result, and hopefully I don’t drown her out with TOO much talking.

Here’s what’s in store in episode eighty-four…

Runtime
66 minutes

Up for Discussion

1. Introduction
2. KNOW YOUR ENEMY– Q& A with this week’s guest Kelly Cameron (2:39)
3. COME TALK TO ME – Fielding some listener feedback on movie parties they want to attend (12:18)
4. THE NEW SLANG – Review and reaction to THE GREAT GATSBY (26:01)
5. THE OTHER SIDE – I couple THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON (44:37)
6. THE OTHER SIDE – Kelly couples MOULIN ROUGE! (54:44)

I had just started getting used to the short dispatches these Hot Docs episodes were becoming, when along came a great discussion that turned out to run the length of a normal Matineecast episode! Who knew there would be so much to say about Republicans in Iowa?

The great thing about this discussion is that beyond the film up for discussion itself, I’m able to get my guest to share a few insightful thoughts on nonfiction film in general.

Here’s what’s in store in part three…

Sometimes you find a film, sometimes a film finds you. In the run-up to Hot Docs I was given a whole mittful of titles to go through, and right around the time I thought I’d watched as much as I could in advance, I found myself saying “just one more.

The Matineecast stays nonfiction as I sit down with a the director of this beautiful film at the 20th annual Hot Docs Film Festival.

The moment this film was done, I immediately reached out to the filmmaker in the hopes we could discuss his work. Luckily for me, he agreed.

What would happen in ALMOST FAMOUS if William Miller had a hard time fitting in on the road with Stillwater? Well it might play out a bit like MISTAKEN FOR STRANGERS.

The Matineecast goes nonfiction as I sit down with a truly unconventional and unforgettable director at the 20th annual Hot Docs Film Festival.

A point of conversation comes up at the end of this podcast, and I feel it bears repeating.

My guest jokingly mentions that he wonders how many people will hear his handiwork, since the titles we discuss are all rather indie and likely lesser-seen. He raises a good point, since I know a lot of people skip episodes on films they haven’t seen (hence discussions on GINGER & ROSA or THE FP get lesser exposure.

I respond by saying something I’m not sure I’ve expressed until right now – that it’s these sorts of films that interest me more as a podcaster, since they get less exposure and often prompt greater discussion. I mean, this weekend I could have been the 150th movie podcast talking about OBLIVION, but what can I bring to the table to set this conversation apart from the other 149? Further, what’s left to say about a blockbuster like OBLIVION?

It is true that these sorts of episodes get less plays, but I’m hoping to slowly start reversing that.

Who knows? It could make for a whole new direction for the show!

Here’s what’s in store in episode eighty-three…

For the second week in a row, The Matineecast arrives with a curious formula:

Great guest, less than sexy feature review.

Episode 81′s main review wasn’t as attractive as some because the film itself was lacklustre. Episode 82 on the other hand features a fantastic film for the main review, but one that is low-profile and probably not widely seen. Once again though, the discussion is fun. So even if you haven’t seen the main attraction, I think my guest and I will still be able to entertain you.

This episode allowed for a little bit of closure for me since it gave me one last moment to articulate a few thoughts on Roger Ebert. I was quietly appreciative that Dor added in a few thoughts and memories of her own, since it brought a welcome switch from mourning into the aether.

A funny thing happened on the way to Matineecast 81: The film chosen for the feature review turned out to be something of a non-entity. Fortunately though, my guest this week is a smart cookie, and can still offer up a fun discussion, even if it seems at a glance like there might not be that much there to discuss. In a way, there is almost an audible camaraderie on display, likely originating from being on-mic together five times in the last year alone.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, the abundance of Backstreet Boys in this episode was inspired when I learned in the run-up to the episode that Mr. Roan is an unabashed fan.

Sadly, I forgot to ask him to explain within the runtime of the show, but perhaps he’ll grace us with some clarity in the comment section.

I don’t think I could have timed this week’s guest spot any better.

Hot on the heels of my 2000th post, I bring on a blogger who has kept me pushing forward. You see she drops by this space early and often and has long been supportive of what I do – and little does she know that there are a lot of days where that really provides me a boost.

Admittedly, there are other films I would have enjoyed discussing with her more than the new release we selected. However, the biggest restriction with bringing in international guests is that you’re at the mercy of international release schedules.

Still – she brought a great deal of charm and enthusiasm to the show, so who am I to complain.

Hey, remember these?

I can’t take complete credit for the return of this series. This episode seemed to fit into a gap in the schedule more than it was a result of actual planning. However, maybe it will serve as a kickstart to getting the discussion going again.

This episode captures a panel I took part in last weekend, which gathered three other podcasters who have their eye on the media:

Anthony Marco of TV, Eh and Best Episode Ever
Candice Lepage of Limited Release
and Rick Weiss of The Zero Check

If I may say so, one unforeseen benefit of the impromptu gathering is that it got me listening to all of their shows, and they’re all great listens!

To recap the concept of this offshoot – expect to see these episodes are supposed to turn up once a month. My intention is for them to be a bit more raw (there are almost no cuts in this conversation), a bit shorter, with no rules, and less of a pecking order on who sits down at the table.

Enjoy!

So that was fun huh? ARGO won, Jennifer tripped, Quentin rambled, Daniel charmed, Seth amused-or-sucked depending on who you asked, and we incessantly tweeted the whole. damned. thing.

Let’s move on shall we? Today I give you something that has serendipitously turned into a great palette cleanser…

What is a film podcaster supposed to do when there is nothing in the theatre worth podcasting about? I suppose the answer is “get creative”.

Happily, getting creative has resulted in one of my favorite episodes to date where we talk about a few titles outside of my usual comfort zone. I have to thank my guest for the great ideas…even if the idea was for me to watch something spectacularly dumb.

Once or twice, I’ve thought about shaking up my format.

Every once in a while, I’ll hear an episode of one of the shows I listen to regularly – shows that feature a regular team that talk amongst themselves every episode. They have a rhythm all their own, a banter, a familiarity. When I hear that, I think about stopping my neverending conga line of guests and instead teaming up with one person permanently.

But then I get afternoons like yesterday, and it makes me think that’s just temptation speaking.

The one thing I like about the neverending conga line is the way it keeps me on my toes. It allows the show to ebb and flow, with certain episodes making certain segments longer than usual and certain segments shorter.

So besides the fact that my guest this week did a stellar job of filling in when a friend got called away, she also got me to get out of my comfort zone a bit and talk about a different slice of cinema. There’s no way I’d get that with a steady co-host.

Like clockwork.

It seems like every six months or so, I go to record an episode of this show and get met with catastrophic technical difficulties. You’d think that after three years of this gig I’d have it all figured out by now…but what can I say?

The good news is that I am lucky enough to have some really great friends who drop by to do this song & dance with me, so when things do go wrong, they’re nothing but supportive and help me rebuild things…often better than it was originally!

So while I start teaching myself some new steps to the process, and say a few prayers to whatever deity lords over my MacBook Pro, take a listen to this barnburner of an episode.

This episode would have been up an hour ago, but Jodie Foster wouldn’t give me back my microphone.

So Oscar nominees! I don’t care all that much about who does and doesn’t win as much as I am interested in who makes the shortlist as the year’s best. This year there were more surprises than there have been for a little while, which will only keep me coming back for more!

I didn’t ask her directly, but I have a hunch my guest this episode would agree.

So come with us as we stay up past zero dark thirty, to show our amour for the southern wilds where the beasts live. We witness Django get unchained, thumb through the playbook, and talk about pi’s life. We then get misreable about argo and Lincoln (Shoulda quit while I was ahead, right?)

Last year I mentioned how much my Oscar guest was a champ because of all the technical difficulties she’s endured. This year she took time out from her vacation to take part in the show. So allow me to say it one more time: Champ.

Talkin' 2012 at the Movies with guests Courtney Small from Big Thoughts, along with Dionne Dornford Small and Lindsay Ragone. Together we close out the year by naming off our top five films.

After a year’s worth of podcasts recorded on patios, coffee shops, bars, diners and donut shops, it was nice to come home to close the year out. It also felt fitting to open our doors to company given that this is the time of year to gather with the people you care about and raise a glass.

Speaking of people I care about, I’m glad I was finally able to bring one of my local friends on the show. I’ve been hanging around with Courtney for a year-and-a-half now, so his appearance on a full episode of the show is mildly overdue at least!

As is to be expected, this episode is lengthy – matter of fact it’s the longest Matineecast episode ever. It beat the old mark by about five minute, and appropriately enough the old mark was held by the “2011 in review” episode. I’m thinking this cements the fact that I will never record a year-end episode that runs less than an hour and twenty minutes.

Once again I bring you an episode that is far more collaborative than most, and I want to thank everybody who helped me bring it together. I couldn’t be happier with the results, and it’s a fitting send-off for a year where going to the movies introduced me to so many wonderful people – both around the world and here at home .By the way – For my favorite part of the episode, go straight to chapter seven, or the sixty-one minute mark.

Finally, if you’re curious about the songs used as bed music, the track list can be found below in the show notes.

Even the best laid plans of mice and men.

During the last episode, you might have heard me allude to episode seventy-four as being “a special episode” for The Matineecast. It is, which is to say that it brings in two returning guests and strays from the usual rhythm of the show…however, I had originally planned to take the episode off and hand it over to my guests completely.

Things change, especially during this very busy time of year, and one can only roll with the changes. So while we have eschewed the usual rhythm of The Christmas Episode, there are still a few Christmas touches to this episode.

Pulling this off took a bit more effort than usual, and for that I have my friends to thank.

A quick word of thanks.

As I mention early on in this episode, The Matineecast turns three years old this week. In that time I’ve met a lot of great people, talked to some pretty interesting guests, and honed the show into something I’m rather proud of. In the early-going I used to joke that I had a listenership of six. I’ve obviously grown since then, and the encouragement that has come all of you awesome people who have tuned in has been wonderful.

In an age where so many blogs and podcasts fold up after a few weeks, I’m pretty proud to have kept the show going for this long…and hopefully I’m not done with it anytime soon.

So again, thanks. Thanks for listening, for sending in feedback, for giving me ideas to make it better, and for dropping by to do a guest spot if you have indeed done so.

Welcome to The Matineecast’s 007 episode. In a way, it’s a little bit later than I wish it was, given that most of the SKYFALL excitement and discussion seems to have peaked with the North American premiere last weekend. However, it feels like one extra week of breathing room allows this episode a retrospective vibe.

Considering how I don’t know when or if there will be another 007-centric episode of this show, the fact that it is retrospective of both SKYFALL and the franchise on the whole suits me just fine.

One thing that might come through in the audio is a sense of familiarity. You see my guest today has been a dear family friend for nine years now, so hopefully you will forgive the odd drift towards our friendship and our individual spouses.

Oh, and at one point in the show you will actually hear me get distracted by an iconic moment in 007 history…be sure to listen for it.

Here’s what’s in store in episode seventy-two…

Runtime
66 minutes

The good news is that when I sat down to record this episode, my voice had pretty much returned to normal, and I was able to record it in the quiet confines of Casa del McNeil.

The bad news is that around the forty-seven minute mark, when we get to Steve’s selection for The Other Side, my mic goes apeshit and my audio sounds really fuzzy. Steve’s audio is fine, and mine isn’t completely inaudible, so I decided to leave it in…but if it bothers you, fast forward to the fifty-six minute mark and it goes away.

I’m a little bit surprised that we were able to record this episode at all, since it was captured the night Sandy started lashing at Toronto – not nearly as fiercely as what happened to the American East Coast, but still bad enough to knock out my internet mere minutes after Steve and I wrapped this conversation.

Hopefully you enjoy the discussion, and while I’m not dead certain, I think this might be one of the longest reviews we’ve ever recorded here on The Matinee.

Every once in a while, fates align themselves in a way that suggests a particular podcast episode isn’t meant to happen.

These moments arrive for all sorts of reasons, both avoidable and unavoidable, but they all seem to scream that I should just fold my hand and cash out. Of course, when the podcasting gods send me such signs, I tend to get all the more defiant and make the episode happen anyway. See, it’s these plans – the ones perilously close to going awry – that often garner the best results. In many ways, that was the case again yesterday.

For one wonderful hour, my voice held together better than it has in days. In that hour I had the chance to share a drink and some laughs with a good friend here in town and record some lacking in polish, but dripping with energy.

So there were a few sacrifices that needed to be made on the path to this entry, but for my money it still delivers.

Oddly enough, I actually didn’t have the foggiest clue what I wanted to discuss this month until I got a comment on the site this week from John LaRue of The Droid You’re Looking For. So first and foremost – thanks a mile John!

This time out, a pair of familiar voices join me – namely Matthew Price who you might remember from IBD vol. 1, and Bob Turnbull who joined me for IBD vol. 2. These two gents were chosen specifically to talk not just as movie lovers, but also as parents…and for my money, they bring the goods as both.

To recap the concept of this offshoot – expect to see these episodes turning up once a month. My intention is for them to be a bit more raw (there are almost no cuts in this conversation), a bit shorter, with no rules, and less of a pecking order on who sits down at the table.

Enjoy!

I’m sort of expecting this to be an unpopular episode, which is a bit of a shame because I think there’s a lot of good things contained within. However, I fully realize that besides featuring a review on a film that’s slowly rolling out, we’re also discussing two films that aren’t all that popular with my listenership.

But such is life.

I did discover something in editing this show together – I have some pretty great friends who volunteer to drop by as guests. You see this is the third post-TIFF episode where I felt slightly off my game, but I was propped up by my guest (maybe next year I should hold off recording for an extra week).

So allow me to re-thank Jess Rogers and Marc Ciafardini for episodes 21 and 41, and today’s guest for being friends indeed to a friend in need.

Here’s what’s in store in episode sixty-eight…

Runtime
70 minutes, 40 seconds

Up for Discussion

5. THE OTHER SIDE pt 1 – Jandy couples LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (47:21)

Come Talk to Me: For episode sixty-eight, going up in just a few days, I’d like to know – What’s a cinematic event you’d like to experience?
Talkin' PREMIUM RUSH with guest Andrew Robinson from GMan reviews. He and Ryan also field some listener feedback, and rhyme off their top five most anticipated films for the fall of 2012.

As you may or may not know, I take some ribbing for how long it takes me to get a guest back on the show for a second go-round. Funny thing though – over the course of this little audio experiment I’m conducting, I noticed something.

In leaving a longer gap than usual between appearances, a chemistry builds between myself and my guests (who usually tend to also keep up with the overall discussion here at the site). So sure, I could bring people right back just a few weeks or months after they make their first appearance, but something tells me that familiarity that’s palpable in their second shows wouldn’t be what you hear in episodes like this.

The feature discussion of this film might not be up your alley, but I urge you to listen in. The jovial chemistry that has been built over the years makes it a fun listen, so too does our audible giddiness for being part of the same cinematic circus in mere days.

Here’s what’s in store in episode sixty-seven…

Runtime
72 minutes, 36 seconds

Up for Discussion

1. Introduction
2. KNOW YOUR ENEMY– Q& A with this week’s guest Andrew Robinson from GMan Reviews (5:03)
3. COME TALK TO ME – Fielding some listener feedback on highly anticipated fall films (16:45)
4. THE NEW SLANG – Review and reaction of PREMIUM RUSH (25:45)
5. THE BEST OF YOU – Top five movies we’re looking forward to this fall (40:21)

Jason and Mike join me for coffee to talk about summer 2012 at the movies.

Before you press play, allow me to make a promise: Volume 9 will be as short as I can keep it.

For two months in a row now, the roundtable episodes have clocked up around one hour…which was not the intention when I first started the series. In both cases though, the discussion was just way too much fun to cut short. Still, enough’s enough – next month, we’ll keep it brief.

That said, I really like the meandering nature of this discussion with Mike Lane and Jason Gorber. It’s very much like the sorts of conversations my film-geek friends and I find ourselves in every time we get together. Discussions that sort of have a topic, but continually stray into other topics. As it happens, I’m a bit sorry that I didn’t just keep the tape rolling since we followed this discussion by heading off and talking for hours about so many more film-related topics!

To recap the concept of this offshoot – expect to see these episodes turning up once a month. My intention is for them to be a bit more raw (there are almost no cuts in this conversation), a bit shorter, with no rules, and less of a pecking order on who sits down at the table.

Enjoy!

Back in the spring, I started following a website and thought to myself “This writer would make a pretty good guest on The Matineecast”. Then in the summer, she came out to join a group of us for a few drinks and some Verhoeven and my hunch was confirmed. So when time came to finally get her on the show, and the Gods of scheduling seemed to be conspiring against me, I dared to defy them…because there was no way I wasn’t getting her on.

Amusingly, the topic du jour is actually a “jour” or two past its best-before date, but the conversation was still a lot of fun and is well worth the listen.

So while TIFF is in the air and all eyes turning towards the autumn, join me for one of the last kicks at summer with a wonderfully energetic guest.

Surprise!

While a full episode of The Matineecast – one complete with “Know Your Enemy” and “The Other Side” is still a few days away, I come to you with something unexpected for the dog days of summer.

This episode wasn’t as on-the-fly as previous episodes of its ilk, but it was rather unintentional. How unintentional you ask? Well consider the film up for discussion and ask yourself if it sounds like the sort of movie I’d chase down willingly.

I explain how I found myself in a screening within the first few minutes of the show…let’s just say that Matineecast #64 is officially sponsored by MaMo. That’s about all I want to explain off the draw, except that within the course of the show, we mention Matineecast #18.1 a few times. That show has been dragged out of the archives and can now be found back here for anyone’s reference and listening enjoyment.

Oh, and one last thing? The way this show happened will not become a habit.

Here’s what’s in store in episode sixty-four…

Runtime

Andrew joins me for baseball and blue plate specials to talk about the very best films of all time.

This month, I took the show on the road.

As many of you know by know, I ventured out to the American Midwest a few weeks ago to catch a bit of baseball, and to meet up with some fellow movie-lovers. Passionate, like-minded folk who up until now have only been avatars, commenters, and the occasional disembodied podcast voice.

You didn’t think that I come back from such meet-ups with no documentation, did you? Who am I, Jodie Foster in CONTACT?

My plan was to wait until my afternoon in Milwaukee, WI where I rallied up with Andrew James from Row Three. After taking in some Brewers baseball at Miller Park, we grabbed a table at a nearby diner to record a podcast.

We could have kept the discussion breezy, but such a rare meeting of the minds needed to be marked, and with the up coming Sound & Sight Top Ten in mind, Andrew and I decided to rhyme off the films we believe to be the ten best of all time. (Feel free to argue with us at will)

To recap the concept of this offshoot – expect to see these episodes turning up once a month. My intention is for them to be a bit more raw (there are almost no cuts in this conversation), a bit shorter, with no rules, and less of a pecking order on who sits down at the table.

Enjoy!

Talkin' THE DARK KNIGHT RISES with guests Dan Fogarty and Brian J. Roan as The Podcast Trilogy concludes. We also read some listener feedback on what Warner could do with Batman now, and discuss The Dark Knight Trilogy as a whole.

It concludes.

Three movies.
Three podcasters.
Three shows.

As the experiment draws to a close, I’m struck by a few things. First of all is the fact that this episode of The Matineecast is somewhat epic in nature. It’s the longest episode I’ve ever done (a runtime I don’t see myself eclipsing anytime soon). I could have been more vicious with the editing, however I thought three people weighing in on three films deserved the proper room to breathe. So if the lack of brevity bothers you, My apologies.

The second thing that strikes me is the quality of the end result. When I came to Dan and Brian with this idea in the spring, it seemed tricky and involved. The fact that the three of us had never been on the same podcast together, and thus were unsure of our combined chemistry, made thing that much more uncertain. With all of that in mind, I couldn’t be happier with the end result of the three-show series. The guys have been gracious hosts, fantastic guests, and turned this experiment into everything I wanted it to be – and more!

Finally, I’m struck with a sense of gratefulness for anyone who listened to all three instalments. When a film like THE DARK KNIGHT RISES drops, it seems as though everybody in the blogosphere is talking about it – so if you’ve allowed Brian, Dan, and I to talk to you about it for almost four hours, then I can’t help but be very thankful for the support.

If you haven’t already heard them, here is where you’ll find our discussions on

BATMAN BEGINS and

Here’s what’s in store in episode sixty-three…

Runtime
101 minutes, 41 seconds

Up for Discussion

1. Introduction
2. 3. COME TALK TO ME – Fielding some listener feedback on where Warner could go with the Batman franchise now. (18:39)
4. THE NEW SLANG – Review and reaction of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (27:03)
8. DARK WAS THE NIGHT – We sum up things we liked and disliked from the whole trilogy, speculate on what effect the films will have on Warner/DC, and toss around ideas on what Christopher Nolan could do next. (67:31)

There’s something slightly criminal about how long it took to get today’s guest back on The Matineecast for another kick at the can. Earlier this year, I joked that Mike Mendez would hold the record for the longest stretch between episodes, but with about a fifty episode gap, today’s guest gives that record a run.

People joke with me about who I bring on this show and when, but I shake my head to myself as I wrestle with when to schedule new guests and when to bring guests back.

With all that in mind, I hope you enjoy this episode. It took a little more effort than usual, but I think he results are worth it. We bring back a new feature that was launched just two episodes back, and we unveil the meaning behind that curious stinger that closed out episode sixty-one.

It was a hot night in both Toronto and Boston, so I hope you’ll excuse the slight echo of an air conditioner on Alex’s side of the line. She offered to turn it off, but what kind of sadistic host would that make me?

Here’s what’s in store in episode sixty-two…

Precious few times have I recorded a podcast episode where the host is getting up early and the guest is staying up late, but that’s exactly what we had here.

Once again, I bring you an episode where I discuss a film rather quickly after watching it, and before I got a chance to flesh out my thoughts and write about it. I’d say that this was becoming a trend, but happily I already know that I’ll be getting back to normal for episode 63 in two weeks. I wonder if there will be an audible difference?

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – I wish at the age of seventeen I had the cinematic taste that this week’s guest does. maybe then, I’d be further ahead of the game and not just catching up with French New Wave, Italian Neo-Realism, and the wonderful melodrama of Powell & Pressburger. Makes me wonder how film-savvy she’s gonna be when she’s my age!

Oh, and there’s a little something extra in this episode…I wonder if anybody will notice.

Here’s what’s in store in episode sixty-one…

Runtime
Maybe she was right…then again, maybe not.

There are a few bumps and bruises along the way in this episode, but I think it still works very well. Truthfully, this sort of four-person, two boys/two girls dynamic was what I wanted to trot out for every IBD episode. Here’s hoping I can do it more often! For this show, the four of us talked about the changing face of movie stars, and what it takes to be one and stay one nowadays.

My guests this week include a podcasting vet, and two rookies. The old hand is Corey Pierce from CriticalMassCast; the newbies are Danielle D’Ornellas and Titania Plant. The four of us got

To recap the concept of this offshoot – expect to see these episodes turning up once a month. My intention is for them to be a bit more raw (there are almost no cuts in this conversation), a bit shorter, with no rules, and less of a pecking order on who sits down at the table.

Enjoy!

So here’s the thing…

I’m actually not all that fussy about granting requests for specific guest spots on The Matineecast. While I’m not looking to force people to watch something they’re going to dislike, I also don’t really want to bring people in to discuss a film I know they’ll love. I’ve done that in the past and the results have been…spotty.

However, sometimes you just can’t deny enthusiasm. Such was the case when I agreed to this episode back in January.

I’m actually curious what listeners will think of this episode, since it marks the beginning of a new feature. In a few ways, I think it really changes the dynamic of the show…but a little change can be a good thing. Of course, what I think is not nearly as important as what you – the listener – thinks. So let me know how the new feature suits your palette.

Oh, and that enthusiastic request? The end-result was pretty fuckin’ good. So maybe I should start taking requests more often.

Maybe…

Here’s what’s in store in episode sixty…

It’s not the show’s birthday (that happens in November), but my own. And since much of the show’s first year and a half have been archived, you might not know it, but the show actually has a birthday tradition.

I could explain it here, but then what reason would you have to listen to the show?

What I will mention here though is how grateful I am to this week’s guest for stepping in at the last minute and being such a badass guest! I’m a bit of a demanding host in the way that I rely on the kindness of strangers, and moments like this make me feel lucky to know such smart and outgoing bloggers.

So grab a piece of cake and pull on your doofy headphones; it’s time to talk about a film that’s a personal favorite and sing the praises of those that inspire us.

Tried something a little different after five shows. It was such a lovely day here in Toronto that staying cooped up in a diner wouldn’t do. So we put on our caps and jerseys, and headed on down to the Toronto Blue Jays game to record our show during batting practice. I can’t say that I’m going to make a habit of it or anything, but it was certainly a fun experiment.

I want to put up a bit of an apology in advance, because I realize in hindsight that this discussion was less about me asking questions of my guests and more me just making points and having them agree or disagree. Sorry about that, next time I’ll map things out a bit more carefully.

My guests this week are two dear friends that make my work days that much more endurable. As it happens, they themselves are also accomplished podcasters who host The Mind Reels – a show that brings in some badass guests! So when you’re done here, be sure to go over to their site and give a few of their shows a listen.

To recap the concept of this offshoot – expect to see these episodes turning up once a month. My intention is for them to be a bit more raw (there are almost no cuts in this conversation), a bit shorter, with no rules, and less of a pecking order on who sits down at the table.

Enjoy!

For only the second time in the run of this podcast, the guest Skypes in from the southern hemisphere. Thankfully though, this time I didn’t have to stay up until 1am in Toronto to get things done. While this worked out well for me, I should thank my guest here and now for the early wake-up call he endured to talk superheroes with me.

I’ll readily admit that in some respects our conversation about the blockbuster of 2012 (so far) might feel like a day late, what with the film already playing for ten days in North America. Hopefully though, you aren’t Avenger’d out just yet. If so, I’m sorry to add to the white noise – most of the rest of this summer’s shows should happen in a more timely fashion.

I hope y’all got your fill of nourishment during the three Hot Docs episodes, because it’s nothing but calorie laden popcorn from now until September.

I’m really going to miss talking with directors, producers, and stars about the films they make…think I can arrange something with Joss Whedon for Matineecast 58? In wrapping up the audio component of my Hot Docs coverage, I sat down with the team behind a film that really stood out for me. It dared to do things a little bit differently, and tell a slightly familiar story in an unfamiliar way.

Here’s a glimpse at what they have done…

Seriously folks – I love getting into new music. Even if it’s not brand-spankin’ new (which it never is), just the fact that it’s new to me will mean that it’ll be chiming through my big doofy headphones on repeat for weeks. So getting to soak up a documentary *and* getting into a new soul singer at the same time? Heaven.

What’s even better is when the film’s director takes the time to sit down and talk about it with you…even if it does take five or ten minutes to find him at the agreed-upon meeting place.

Saturday night found me in the middle of a conversation I was highly anticipating – namely with the talent behind my favorite doc of the festival so far, and the fascinating man the film is about.

The director telling the story is Neil Berkeley, whose film BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING had its first Hot Docs showing last night. The man at the centre of the story is Wayne White, and he is every bit as engaging in person as he is within the scope of the film.

The two men were nice enough to chat with me on Markham Street on a balmy evening

Here’s what’s in store in part one…

Talkin' THE CABIN IN THE WOODS with guest Jess Rogers. She and Ryan also read some listener feedback on documentaries and rattle off a list of their top five moments of a bait and switch.

As much as I love talking to new guests – and a new one will be in the hot seat for episode fifty-eight – I get a little extra boost when my friends stop by. What’s more, it’s probably fitting that today’s guest became a closer friend after one or two podcasts.

In an amusing twist, we warn folks about how spoilerific we are going to get regarding CABIN IN THE WOODS, and then proceed to not get all that spoilerific. I guess that’s what happens when a film’s crux is unveiled the way it is for this particular film.

One last note, the schedule as you have become used to it is about to be thrown for a loop as the Hot Docs festival approaches. There will be podcasting content in that time, but it will be more focused on festival events. The regular format will return in three weeks’ time, and then resume it’s every-other-week schedule going forward into the summer.

Here’s what’s in store in episode fifty-seven…

Runtime
71 minutes, 22 seconds

Beth "Danger Girl" Beard and Steve Johnston join me for coffee to talk about TV.

DJ M.A.D Hatter here spinning your requests until the sun comes up. This one goes out to a cat named Simon who wrote in from London say “I don’t hear enough about TV on your show – Why don’t you do something about that?”

Simon’s right of course, there isn’t much discussion of TV on this website or the podcast, and that’s mostly because I find TV to be such a difficult medium to critique. They tell stories in such a different manner, and said stories play differently depending on the circumstances the viewer sees the show. So perhaps the conversation shouldn’t be about what we watch, so much as it is how we watch it.

My guests this week are two people I’m lucky to know. They are both great friends; so much so that they both agreed to gather together and talk for this podcast with very little notice when illness ravaged my original guests. So while I have already said to them face to face, I wish to say it again here: Beth, Steve, you’re the cat’s pyjamas.

To recap the concept of this offshoot – expect to see these episodes turning up once a month. My intention is for them to be a bit more raw (there are almost no cuts in this conversation), a bit shorter, with no rules, and less of a pecking order on who sits down at the table.

Enjoy!

I’ve been looking forward to bringing this particular guest in for some time now as he has been a great source of support for me over the last seven or eight months. It’s always great to have people around that are that encouraging…and even greater when they are people you work with every day.

There isn’t a whole lot of analysis this week, just a whole lot of two dudes geeking out over a cool movie. However, with the topic at hand I don’t think I would have wanted it any other way.

Here’s what’s in store in episode fifty-six…

Runtime
69 minutes, 10 seconds

Up for Discussion

1. Introduction
2. KNOW YOUR ENEMY– Q& A with this week’s guest Tim Rideout from The Mind Reels. (3:14)
4. THE NEW SLANG – Review and reaction of THE RAID: REDEMPTION (24:41)
5. THE BEST OF YOU: Ryan and Tim discuss their top five action films. (38:40)

See, I enjoy editing the raw conversation: I believe that giving it a once over gives the whole thing a certain finesse. So the schedule seemed to write itself: record one week, edit and post the next week.

Every once in a while though, a movie comes along that I want to talk about instantly – thus a recording/editing weekend presents itself. When such occasions arise, I like to record on Friday night or Saturday morning, then edit and post on Sunday.

With episode 55 though, we decided to do things differently. For this show, we recorded Sunday morning and I edited and posted through most of Sunday afternoon…one. long. marathon.

If I ever allude to doing it all in one day again – put a bullet in my kneecap. Don’t just wing me: land it.

The good news though is that this episode features a great friend sitting shotgun, bringing a lot of laughs with her at an ungodly hour, and discussing one of this year’s most hotly anticipated films.

Shirley Hughes and Chris Edwards join me for a drink to talk all things silent cinema in advance of The Toronto Silent Film Festival.

My attention has turned to yet another film festival…but this one won’t be offering me any new titles. Quite the opposite actually.

There are two curiosities that occur within this episode. For starters, it’s probably The Matineecast where yours truly speaks the least of all the ones recorded to date. For seconds, I have to smile at the irony of how two silent film lovers are so very chatty.

My guests this week are Shirley Hughes and Chris Edwards from the upcoming Toronto Silent Film Festival. Their fourth annual effort of spreading the love of silent cinema across this fair city begins in just ten days, so as a novice to the genre I thought I’d sit down with them to get the scoop on their love of the format and what to expect.

To recap the concept of this offshoot – expect to see these episodes turning up once a month. My intention is for them to be a bit more raw (there are almost no cuts in this conversation), a bit shorter, with no rules, and less of a pecking order on who sits down at the table.

This episode does run a little bit long, clocking in closer to the runtime of a regular Matineecast than an IBD episode. However, in seeing how passionate both Shirley and Chris were to talk silent cinema, I couldn’t bring myself to cut them short at any turn.

If you’re close to Toronto, consider coming out to one of these truly unique events as part of the Toronto Silent Film Festival.

Enjoy!

That’s what you’re in for this week.

We go a little bit off-book with this episode, which I’d wager people who listen to this show wish I’d do a little more often. Not only could I not settle on a top five to tie into the feature review (top five scenes of male nudity?), but I felt like reminding myself and you fine listeners about times gone by…and dropped a good ol’ montage into the third act.

I don’t want to waste any more words setting it up, except to say that this felt just like old times.

Talkin' WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN with guest Jessica from The Velvet Cafe. She and Ryan also read some listener feedback on smaller film recommendations and rattle off a list of five of their own.

Two days ago, just before I sat down to put the finishing touches on this episode, I actually attended a conference on social media. Two of the five sessions I attended on the first day pertained to podcasting, and part of me wonders if the ideas I took away from them will be evident to my listeners and followers going forward. They’ll be subtle changes, so don’t expect a complete tear-down of what you’ve come to expect – but hopefully they can make for a better product overall.

That streak of great guests I’ve been talking about lately? It’s very much intact. You’ll probably notice that today’s show runs a little on the long side. That’s because my guest today was so passionate and well-spoken that it pained me to edit much of her discussion. The show takes me back to Scandinavia for the first time since last spring, and brought upon a great moment of turnabout for yours truly.

You see by now I’m legend for acting aghast at what people haven’t seen (though I’ve been trying to tone down the act). This episode, a title comes up that I haven;t seen, and it was pretty shameful to admit. Listen in to discover which one.

One of the best conversations I’ve had on this show awaits – I hope you enjoy.

Here’s what’s in store in episode fifty-three…

Runtime
73 minutes, 50 seconds

Up for Discussion

1. Introduction
2. KNOW YOUR ENEMY– Q& A with this week’s guest Jessica of The Velvet Cafe. (3:40)
3. COME TALK TO ME – Fielding some listener feedback on suggested smaller films (14:22)
4. THE NEW SLANG – Review and reaction of WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN (21:51)
5. THE BEST OF YOU – Ryan and Jessica recommend five smaller films of their own. (38:34)
